Wine gift baskets are more than just wine; they also contain a fine combination of accompanying foods with the wine. They make wonderful gifts for just about anyone. So, if you’re trying to pick a way to present a nice Port or Bordeaux, consider using a wine gift basket.

Wine gift baskets are among the finest of an already elite set of options. Filled with fresh fruits, cookies, nuts, and more they make for a gift that will be remembered long after the outstanding Chablis is gone.

A wine gift basket may hold just the vintage you’ve been seeking. Everything from a creative Cabernet to a zingy Zinfandel can be found nestled among a dozen other delightful treats. A wine gift basket can hold that precious Syrah you’ve been dying for months to try. Or the centerpiece may be a quirky new Gewrztraminer you heard about at a party yesterday.

Bottle sizes range from miniature hotel-type samples to a magnum of champagne. A wine gift basket could be filled out with a dozen small bottles of a favorite varietal. Or, it might be a breathtaking variety that allows you to sample a new wine every month. A giant bottle from your favorite region in France or Italy can form the centerpiece of an outstanding package.

But the wine itself is only the beginning. A wine gift basket is filled with traditional and creative items. Delicious gourmet crackers sit beside irresistible truffles. Chocolates go well with a fine Sangria. Dried apricots and other fruits are the perfect companion to a stellar Chardonnay.

Brut champagne might be more to your taste. Surrounded by a fine set of gourmet cheeses, a wine gift basket of champagne will make for a memorable afternoon that can go on late into the evening.

The baskets themselves are also not run-of-the mill designs either. You can get high quality, fabulous-looking baskets made from dark wicker, contemporary metal and porcelain to suit every occasion. For a business colleague, a plastic composite gray style would be perfect. Look around and you will find an endless assortment of wine gift baskets to choose from.

No matter what the occasion may be, a wine gift basket is a great gift. Anniversaries are wonderful times to give these gifts. The couples will be able to celebrate with a wonderful glass of wine and some tasty treats. Even giving your boss a basket at work to celebrate that new promotion is a great idea as well.

Whether for a personal celebration or a corporate event, a wine gift basket is the finest possible choice. Appreciated by everyone, they’ll be treasured for years.

Wine and Cheese Gift Basket

December 20th, 2008

My husband and I exchange gifts with several of our neighbors each year for the holidays. It seems that each year it gets more difficult to think of a gift. This year we decided to give them wine and cheese gift baskets. We did not like the pre-made cheese gift baskets that are available in the kiosks in the mall so we decided to create the baskets ourselves.

Many of the ready made wine and cheese gift baskets include processed cheese spreads. One of the advantages of assembling your own basket is that you can choose varieties of cheese that you know your friends will like. You can also choose one of their favorite wines if you are familiar with their preferences.

It is easy to find attractive baskets for the personalized wine and cheese basket. They can be found at many craft or import stores at reasonable prices. Find an inexpensive cheese cutter to place in the basket as well. You can purchase your cheese selection at any quality deli. Since the meat departments only wrap their products in unattractive paper you can wrap the cheese in plastic wrap. During the holidays it is easy to find holiday design plastic wrap. Next, select the wine to be included. Boxes of specialty crackers are all that is really needed to finish this off. Once you have all the items assembled, place some shredded paper in the bottom of the basket. This serves as perfect filler.

We brought our purchases home and cut and wrapped the cheeses. I placed the filler in the bottom of each basket then arranged the cheeses, cutters and crackers in each. I used several strands of the curling ribbon and tied the strands to the handles. The wine and cheese gift baskets looked very nice and we knew that the cheese was high quality and fresh.

The neighbors all liked receiving these lovely wine and cheese gift baskets. Some of them used them for entertaining while others kept them all to themselves. We decided that they were such a hit with our neighbors that we are going to start giving these baskets to our families as well. If storage is an issue, just pre-wrap the cheeses and assemble the baskets right before the gift exchange. Whether you select one of the pre-made wine and cheese gift baskets or create your own it will be a gift that is loved by the recipient.

After the wedding ceremony is over a newly wed couple settles quickly into the day to day routine. Housework, paying bills and careers become routine and the wedding day memories slowly begin to fade. For married couples there is one special day each year that they commemorate and celebrate their wedding day. On their wedding anniversary, parents, friends and children enjoy giving the married couple a present to commemorate the special day each and every year. Anniversary gift baskets make a perfect gift since they can be personalized to reflect the interests of the celebrating couple.

The Gift that is Personalized

A fine bottle of wine is a typical present for a married couple. Many couples have a definite preference, either white wine or red wine. If you opt for a gift of spirits it would be fun to do something just a little different and surprise them with champagne for the celebration. The happy couple will love it, champagne means celebration. When assembling the basket of goodies it would be a perfect gift if you were to include some fresh strawberries, fine imported chocolates and two lovely champagne flutes to go with the bottle of champagne. Rest assured, this would be one of the best anniversary gift baskets they ever receive.

Anniversary gift baskets offer so much flexibility; the possibilities are nearly endless. If you are even a little creative you could craft a basket to include all ingredients for a fun barbeque feast or you could gather everything necessary to whip up a delicious Chinese dinner. Another option is to select one of the anniversary gift baskets that say romance. Include some aromatherapy candles, luscious body creams and some bubble bath and you will have a gift that will be memorable indeed.

For the gift givers among us that may not be very crafty there are still some great anniversary gift baskets that are unique and ready to go. Companies will make the baskets to order, with pleasure. A fun choice would be to pick up one of the anniversary gift baskets that are themed, such as a movie night basket. A basket of this type would probably include a few new release DVD movies, some soda and of course some microwave popcorn. Another great idea is a nibbler basket filled with decadent treats that the happy couple can indulge in. Choosing some imported chocolates and delicious cookies is a sure winner.

No matter if you purchase a ready made basket or jump in and do the work yourself, anniversary gift baskets are a perfect gift for any couple. Everybody loves to receive a gift, and one received in honor of their special day will be appreciated by the happy couple.

Valuing Wines For Their Class And Quality

December 17th, 2008

Wine classification can be done in many ways. There are specific types of classification criteria that make wines be classified as higher or lower grade wines. This can be easily dealt with when all of the details on wine are known. Sometimes you will not know the grape type or even the region from where it came. Those are not the only limiting factors that allow for the classification of wines.

Wines that are of very high quality and express great flavor, aroma or alcoholic content are very high class wines. These wines are usually made in wooden barrels that allow for more fermentation to occur during the aging process. Aging in wooden barrels lends to the alcohol content as well as the aroma of the wine. Many times, people want to keep the wine in a barrel to tap so it continues to age to perfection.

Many average wines are not classed as they are wines that are produced for the sole purpose of social consummation and for their alcoholic content. Many times an average wine will be considered higher class if it is from a certain year. Many restaurants will offer a variety of over priced average quality wines to choose from. This is due in part by the fact that most people will not be able to tell the difference between wines and their classes. This also saves restaurants a lot of money when serving wine to their guests.

Lower class wines are often found in liquor stores and supermarkets. These are relatively inexpensive and can come in variations of flavors and strengths. Although price does not reflect the quality of the beverage, it can give you an idea of which wines are prized more for a certain overall quality. Many times an untrained tongue will not know the difference between expensive and inexpensive wines.

The aging vessels and other factors may severely change the quality and classification of wine. More expensive wines have extensive testing and quality control measures that have been employed for several decades, even centuries. Bad wine does not go to waste and is usually marketed as lower class wines.

European countries use a different form of classification. France calls their wine Champagne and is only available from France. Wine from Portugal is only known as Port wine. Where the wine was grown and processed is the only classification that matters to most Europeans.

Closing Comments

Many different wines exist in this world and are enjoyed by everyone the world over. Many times the best wines are classified incorrectly and can be found at modest prices.

Touring The World For Wonderful Wines

December 17th, 2008

The classification of a good wine is very speculative. From the taster standpoint, flavor and aroma are key factors in the determining of a great wine. Other factors can make or break a wine’s reputation when not done consistently over time. There are also off days or years when wine is produced that used a lesser quality crop of grapes to make the wine. These are off years that should be considered for their unique or unorthodox flavor and quality.

Many times the flavor of the wine is a major deciding factor of classification of the wine. Obviously, more expensive wines have a more sophisticated flavor that will leave the palate very satisfied. Other times, small changes in flavor are determined by the process in which the wine is aged. Many times, aging in something other than a glass bottle will add different flavors to the wine.

The aging process determines the quality, aroma and flavor of many wines. The aging process will also determine how strong the alcohols in the wine will be. Aging in different vessels allow for different flavors to be produces whereas glass containers keep the most of the original grape flavors in tact.

Aging wine in bottles allows for a mild and very agreeable flavor for most wines. This allows for all of the available sugars in the wine to be fermented when the wine reaches full maturity. Aging in bottles also allows for pressure to be built up during the fermentation process and creates carbon dioxide. This is what makes the wine fizzle when you pop the cork. Many people enjoy fizzy wines and cannot get enough of it.

Aging in wooden barrels may change this process in many different ways. The wood offers extra complex sugars that the fomenters have available to continue to ferment. This allows for the strength of the wine to increase over time as well as adding a distinct flavor that the wood provides in the wine infusion. Many times wine will be produced in different qualities of wood allowing for variation between wines produced with the same grapes.

Additives and additional ingredients may be added to the wine to help it ferment better or to add a flavor or aroma. These additives can change the flavor, aroma and quality of the wine and should be done carefully. Centuries of experimentation has brought the current wines into existence today.

Closing Comments

The world loves wine. Wine producers have been producing wine the same way for centuries. Sometimes a little change can alter the history of wine producing and can change the classification of wine.

Wines And Spirits Through Health And Time

December 17th, 2008

Enjoying a glass of some fine wine or indulging in spirits is a great way to relieve tension from work or the everyday taxing effects that children and other stresses incur. This makes for a very expensive treat for many as others will enjoy the more valuable fermented indulgences with a nice dinner out. Where to find the nicest wines and spirits always tends to call out from the back of the mind when many of the best wines and spirits are hard to find.

Wines are often thought of as sophisticated beverages that are worth top dollar. Although this can be true to a degree, many times people underestimate the quality and flavor of many low cost wines. When a restaurant offers wines, they have extensive researchers to determine the quality of wines and their quality. Then again, a professional wine taster and grader may have their taste buds fouled by so much consumption of wines that they may not accurately portray the quality of a beverage. Everyone has their own opinion of course and yours is the one that should matter when consuming your favorite wine beverage.

Spirits can be described as very, very strong alcoholic beverages. They can be produced by distilling the alcohol so the concentration of alcohol is much greater than other impurities. This removes water from many of the beverages causing their proof to increase as a measure of alcohol by volume. The price of spirits is usually determined on concentration of alcohol rather than by flavor or distinction.

Finding the best wine and spirits is a real locating game. Most liquor stores will carry both wine and spirits from many different places. Again, price does not define quality. Some of the best wines are moderately priced well below that of the most expensive wines. Many wines are priced by where they were made, along with import costs and possibly ingredient contents. Spirits are priced usually by concentration of alcohol or proof.

Your local supermarket or liquor stores will carry many different types of alcoholic beverage. Many times these beverages can be found everywhere else. You will want to look at choices that you may only find online, as these are less sampled wines and spirits that will give you the most for your money.

The best deals for wines and spirits may be found online. Many times a wine or spirits does not sell well or has just been forgotten over time. These bottles can be found online at clearance prices making them extremely affordable. Many times these have a very similar flavor and quality to some of the top brands of wine and spirits for a fraction of the cost.

Closing Comments

Wines and spirits are very good beverages to indulge in. The best selection may not always be available to you at the local supermarket or liquor store, so go online and try new wines and spirits often!

Wine and Food: Four Questions That Will Help You Get It Right

December 9th, 2008

When it comes to wine and food there are some basic rules that do apply, but the number one rule for pairing wine with food is that your personal preference is always the right choice. However, there are wine choices that can enhance your meal when paired properly with the foods you have selected for dining. A great wine pairing can make your dinning experience unforgettable and a wrong choice of wine can bring together a poor mixing of flavors that can spoil the flavors of your meal.

To choose the right wine for dining, consider these four questions.

When you are thinking of which kind of wine to order, keep in mind the following four questions. (1) What is the main dish? Is it chicken, beef, or fish? (2) Will it be grilled, oven-baked, fried, or pan-fried? (3) What kind of sauce will it be served with and what are its flavors? (4) What are the sides dishes and how will their flavors impact the wine? Today there are so many different types of wine that the old favorite rule of wine and food pairing may not always apply. But until you feel comfortable in making the right choice, stick to these basics: red wines with beef, and white wines with fish and poultry.

Think “wine power,” when choosing your wines.

Generally speaking, red wines will work best with dishes that are rich, heavy and have a big flavor. When choosing a beef dish, you should consider the powerful strength of beef and choose a wine that has equal power. This rule also is effective for dishes that are served in rich, thick, heavy, full-of-herbs types of sauces. The reason why red wines and beef goes well together is that red wines contains tannins which mixes with proteins, allowing the flavors to blend well together. As a rule, white wines and red meats do not work well together, because white wine lacks tannins that enables this flavorful combination to occur.

White wines works best with light foods, such as chicken, turkey or fish. Color and the aromatic smells of the flavors influence taste buds and wines that are lighter, such as white wines, will complement the meal and not overpower the flavors of the foods. Sometimes even foods that are light in nature, can be paired with a sauce that is heavy or spicy. This changes the definition of light, and now that dish might be better paired with a red wine or Rose or a wine that has a bit more spice.

A multiple choice meal, requires more than one wine choice.

When you are eating multiple courses, you should choose more than one wine, as multiple courses of foods means multiple flavors and it would be difficult for one wine to taste great with all the different food choices. If your wine budget permits, consider ordering by the glass for appetizers and then order a bottle of wine with the main dish and then finish off by the glass again with a sweet wine for desert pairing.

Start off with a lighter wine (usually white, or light tasting wines) and then move to the more full-bodied types of wine (red wines and burgundy’s) and then move to the dessert wines (ports & muscats.) Keep in mind that wines that are low in acid can often overwhelmed foods even those foods that are deemed light in taste. Wines that are high in acid works best with most foods, even though in some occasions they may not work well as a sipping wine without being accompanied by food. The following examples of going from light to more full-bodied wines are: White Zinfandel, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewrztraminer and Chardonnay. And among reds, from lighter to fuller: Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

You can’t go wrong, when you choose what you like.

The four questions guideline will help you to pair the right wine with your meal selection. Until you feel comfortable in making those wine choices for yourself, ask your server to suggest a wine for you. Be sure and tell them the type of wine you prefer, so they can keep that in mind before coming up with their recommendations. They should provide you with at least three to four great wine pairing choices in different price ranges. If you get a bottle or a glass of wine that you don’t like, then feel comfortable in sending it back and requesting a new bottle or a new wine pour. Of all the wines rules to follow when it comes to wine and food pairing, the number one rule to remember, is to always choose the wine that you like.
